Practical Philosophy

Vedanta philosophy is based on the principle that we are in absolute reality beyond our body and mind right here and right now. A lack of awareness separates our experience of it. When we clue in and direct our lives to live with this knowledge then we can bring together ‘what we know’ with ‘who we are.’ Our mind is key as knowing, being, and awareness occurs in the mind. The instrument of the mind inhabits our body. To develop this enlightened awareness, we have to first settle our bodies. Then we have to settle our minds. We begin with a process of self-inquiry. Yoga is a method to attain mastery over our body-mind system. We can apply different types of yoga (raja, jnana, karma) to address questions such as Who Am I? What is God? What is Truth? What is Real?

Vedanta Society of Edmonton is an independent, non-denominational, non-profit, charitable society to serve seekers on this path of self-inquiry and service to humanity since 1985. The society follows in the footsteps of the Hindu monk from India, Swami Vivekananda, who brought the vision of his master, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, to North America in 1893.

The Society welcomes members of any background or religion, interested in spiritualizing their day to day life. Knowledgable monks from the Ramakrishna Mission Order are regularly invited to lead talks and retreats to share stories and commentaries from Vedanta source texts like the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishad.

Regular activities include meetups on Sunday mornings in the Swami Vivekananda Hall at the Hindu Cultural Centre that extends to a relaxed lunch donated by temple patrons. Members engage in volunteer initiatives as part of their path of knowledge building.
